The Whale Skeleton of The Isle of Wight

With my busy summer, have been very naughty about updating my blog.
But fall is almost here and thought I would restart with a favorite subject--whales.
Years ago, when I lived in Holland, a whale washed up on the coast of Belgium.
I still regret not getting to see it.
This whale originally washed up near the coast of The Needles, England.

For the morning cake reception, we expected over 200 friends and family members.
We decided to make things simple and skip the table clothes, plus it went well
with my centerpieces...bare lilac branches, splashes of gold and family photos.

I found a vintage crib frame for the "50" photo collage.

Michael's Birthday Wine Party

Michael chose a blind wine tasting for his birthday party. We each brought two
bottles of Pinot Noir--one for tasting, the other for the winner. We rated our favorites
and at the end of the evening chose our best and worst. The winner took home a nice stash.

Little Women...In Florida

I've gone through hundreds of family photos this week in preparation
for my parents upcoming 50th Anniversary.
The following are from our wonderful Florida years.

One of my favorites. Such love and trust between me and my
Dad, clearly true from the get go. I love that he drove a bug.

I'm reminded, once again, that when my sister Lynn was born,
so was an instant life-long friendship.

In the jungle, not sure where.

Looks like I'm now two.

I'm just getting back from a week spent all over Minnesota. I was
near Duluth updating a B&B that I originally worked on a decade ago.
Met with my "secret source", attended the funeral of my best friend's grandmother,
spent a great time in New Ulm with Jack and then ran to my parents for a quick visit.

I love these Italian boxes, have bought them for years.
This one will work nicely for tea bags.

As it was too small for some of my vintage ivory beads.

Thought I would drip the candelabra full of more wax,
but ends up holding my beads.

With all the coverage of London, I was inspired to go through
old photos of our wonderful years in England.

Jordan has always been my sidekick, hence the photos of him and
where ever we decided to go. Here, Jord at The Tower of London.

Pennies from Heaven!
Every penny I've found on the ground, since moving into my loft.
The crusty ones are my very favorite. The bowl is ancient Roman-- Bronze.

I keep only the best, funniest or most meaningful fortunes.
The "I like Chinese food" is in there, though.

A handy collection, in a WWII bomb shell, found
in Chichester, England.

A few of my old Bonnie Bell Lipsmackers, apparently they still
smell good--at least Jane thinks so.

Pearls and hats. The top is Victorian beaver, the bottom
is from the Halloween shop at Ragstock. The pearls are
attached to a dainty cross-body bag.

What can I say? My friend, Daune gave me this collection for my
birthday. She heard and remembered my heart's desire and found them for me.
One of the most sentimental gifts ever!

These shells were given to me by my Mom and Grandmother, for Mother's
day, one year. I have them separated from my other shells, in their own glass box.
It was a "shell of a Mother's day!".

Field Trip...Antiques and Eggs

A grand day out with my friend, Jim Hanson. First, the antiques show at
the Minnesota state fairgrounds. The April show is the kickoff to our antiques season.

I can honestly say their truffled kettle corn is the best I've ever had.

I've always been a collector, nature was my first collection--rocks, seashells,
fireflies, four-leaf clovers, anything. Here, a shell sits on an early urn.

I've been collecting watch and clock parts, gears and faces for years. Never really knew why, but found them compelling. They've been tossed into hotel silver goblets or used for jewelry displays in my store. A light bulb went off when introduced to the steampunk style, years ago. It combines my love of all things Victorian- clothes, mourning jewelry, steam trains, Jules Verne and yes, gears. The neo-Victorian style was picking up speed in the late 1980's but appears to be alive and well in the laptop and bluetooth era.

My modest, yet original (1980's) pair of steampunk sunglasses.

PS That's not my hand---it's fake and was a Christmas present
from my friend, Jim.

Russell Bourrienne.

Russell's focus is on custom men's wear. But found plenty
of pieces I can't wait to add to my closet.

Every surface in my loft is fair game for book storage.

Here, a horseshoe chair holds some of my favorites.

As I walk by this shelf and happen to notice, my eye automatically

goes to my vintage cowboy boots or beloved frog skeleton. I see now

that my cookbooks are buried, clearly not getting much use these days.

The suitcase was purchased in NY at the Triple Pier Antiques show.

These Marni boots are my favorite and too cool to be hidden away in

"the black hole" (the nickname friends have given my closet).

So they now sit happily on a fungus bracket shelf in the living room,

along side a couple black sea fans and some chains from a chainsaw.

My son Jordan, 21, is finishing his second year at The Royal Academy of Arts in Den Hague, The Netherlands. These are some of my favorites (out of the thousands!) and all created while still in high school. The "Melt" piece hangs in our entryway and was my mother's day gift a couple years ago.
